High pressure Hugoniot measurements using converging shocks

چکیده
Plate impact experiments are a powerful tool in equation of state development, but are inherently limited by the range of impact velocities accessible to the facility. In an effort to dramatically increase the range of pressures which can be studied with available impact velocities, a new experimental technique is examined. The target plate is replaced by a composite assembly consisting of two concentric cylinders. The target is designed such that the initial shock velocity in a well-characterized outer cylinder is higher than in the inner cylinder material of interest. Conically converging shocks will be generated at the interface due to the impedance mismatch between the two materials and axisymmetric geometry. Upon convergence, an irregular reflection occurs and the conical analog of a Mach reflection develops. This Mach reflection grows until it reaches a steady state, at which point the high pressure state in the Mach disk can be measured using velocity interferometry and impedance matching techniques. The technique is demonstrated by studying the shock response of copper. A strong confinement setup utilizes a low impedance 6061-T6 aluminum outer cylinder and the weak confinement case features a higher impedance molybdenum outer cylinder. The experimental results for copper are in good agreement with a simple analytical model, numerical simulations, and data in the literature. The possibility of utilizing full field measurements to make multiple Hugoniot measurements is also examined. VC 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3590140]

High pressure hugoniot measurements using mach waves
Traditionally, most dynamic shock compression experiments are conducted using a plane one-dimensional wave of uniaxial strain. In this case, the evaluation of the equation of state is simplified due to the geometry, but the amplitude of the induced shock wave is limited by the magnitude of the input load. In an effort to dramatically increase the range of pressures that can be accessed by tradi...

LLE Review, Volume 94 107 Introduction Recently, great interest has been shown in the study of dynamic material response to shocks of high pressure and high strain rate.1,2 Shocks of up to ~1 Mbar and strain rates of ~107 to 108 s-1 were generated in metals (Al, Cu) by laser irradiation. The laser intensity in those experiments (~1011 W/cm2) was high enough to raise the pressure above the Hugon...
متن کاملEquation of state measurements in liquid deuterium to 70 GPa.
Using intense magnetic pressure, a method was developed to launch flyer plates to velocities in excess of 20 km/s. This technique was used to perform plate-impact, shock wave experiments on cryogenic liquid deuterium ( L-D(2)) to examine its high-pressure equation of state. Using an impedance matching method, Hugoniot measurements were obtained in the pressure range of 30-70 GPa. The results of...

Shock temperature measurements via optical pyrometry are being conducted on <100> single-crystal MgO preheated beftire compression to 1905-1924 K. Planar shocks were generated by impacting hot Mo(driver plate)-MgO targets with Mo or Ta flyers launched by the Caltech two-stage light-gas gun up to 6.6 km/s. Quasi-brightness temperature was measured with 2-3% uncertainty by a 6-channel optical pyr...
متن کاملShock Hugoniot of H2O ice
[1] The outcome of impacts onto and between icy planetary bodies is controlled by the material response defined by the shock Hugoniot. New Lagrangian shock wave profile measurements in H2O ice at initial temperatures (T0) of 100 K, together with previous T0 = 263 K data, define five distinct regions on the ice Hugoniot: elastic shocks in ice Ih, ice Ih deformation shocks, and shock transformati...
